Tengrinews.kz – Two Kazakh citizens suspected of involvement in an international Afghan opium supply channel have been detained in Shymkent. The operation was carried out by the interior ministries of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, citing Polisia.kz.

According to the Interior Ministry, the joint special operation was aimed at stopping transnational drug trafficking.
During the detention, about 5 kilograms of Afghan-origin opium were seized from the suspects.
“As part of a joint special operation in the city of Shymkent, two citizens of Kazakhstan were detained, and about 5 kilograms of the narcotic substance opium of Afghan origin were seized from them,” said Bakhytzhan Amirkhanov, head of a department of the Interior Ministry’s Committee for Combating Drug Crime.
A pre-trial investigation has been launched into illegal drug trafficking under Part 3 of Article 297 of the Criminal Code. The suspects have been placed in a temporary detention facility.
The investigation is also considering an additional legal classification of the detainees’ actions under articles related to drug smuggling and participation in a transnational organized criminal group.
