Tengrinews.kz - A Kazakhstani citizen suspected of drug possession has been extradited from Georgia, as reported by the press service of the Prosecutor General's Office.
"With the assistance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, a citizen of Kazakhstan was extradited from Georgia by the employees of the Prosecutor General's Office and the Ministry of Internal Affairs to be held criminally accountable for the storage and transportation of synthetic narcotic drugs in especially large quantities," the statement reads.
Mephedrone was discovered in the Kazakhstani's vehicle by Astana police in June 2023. During operational and preventive measures, authorities stopped the vehicle and found 15 packages of mephedrone weighing a total of 18.96 grams.
The court assigned a non-custodial measure of restraint to the suspect, and he took advantage of this to flee Kazakhstan. After that, he was placed on the international wanted list.
In January of this year, the suspect was detained in Georgia. The Prosecutor General's Office and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, with the assistance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, secured his extradition back to his homeland.
The man is currently in a pre-trial detention center in Astana. He faces a prison sentence of 3 to 7 years.
Previously, a Kazakh woman wanted for committing large-scale fraud has been arrested in Turkey.
