Tengrinews.kz - A Georgian citizen suspected of violating traffic rules has been extradited from Poland to Kazakhstan, according to the General Prosecutor's Office.

The Prosecutor's Office reported that with the assistance of Interpol, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kazakhstan, and the Kazakh Embassy in Poland, a Georgian citizen was returned to Kazakhstan for prosecution.

According to the Prosecutor's Office, in 2023, a Georgian citizen, while intoxicated, drove into oncoming traffic in Almaty and crashed into another vehicle, causing serious injury to the driver. The suspect then fled the scene and was declared internationally wanted.

In April, the man was arrested in Poland. At the request of the Prosecutor's Office, he was extradited to Kazakhstan and has been placed in a pre-trial detention center. He faces up to three years in prison for the crime.

The Prosecutor's Office noted that the extradition was made possible due to the cooperation between the General Prosecutor's Office of Kazakhstan and the Polish Ministry of Justice, despite the lack of an extradition treaty. Poland also extradited the leader of a drug trafficking group that operated in Kazakhstan.
