The Colombian Army seized 1.3 tons of marijuana worth nearly a million dollars, allegedly owned by FARC leftist guerrillas, it said Saturday, AFP reports.
Most of the haul was seized in northern Cauca, where "soldiers seized 1,239 kilograms (2,732 pounds) of marijuana," a statement from the army's third brigade said.
A further 100 kilograms of marijuana was seized in the neighboring department of Valle del Cauca, "from a person who was transporting it to Cali" the capital of the department, the statement added. The stash was apparently intended for export, it said.
The FARC, the leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, is the largest rebel group in Colombia, with between 7,000 and 8,000 members. It has been battling an insurgency against the government for 50 years.
The group has since 2012 been in peace talks with the government. Negotiations at the moment are focused on the cultivation and trafficking of illegal drugs.
