Ablyazov's brother-in-law detained in Lithuania

Mukhtar Ablyazov’s brother-in-law Syrym Shalabayev has been arrested in Vilnus, Lithuania, Tengrinews reports citing delfi.lt.

According to the newspaper, Syrym Shalabayev was arrested in Vilnius on July 28. Other details were not disclosed.

Shalabayev was put on the international wanted list at the request of Ukraine. Along with his brother-in-law, the former head of Kazakhstan's BTA Bank Mukhtar Ablyazov and other accomplices, he is suspected of squandering and misappropriation of property worth several billion dollars in Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Russia and other countries.In particular, Syrym Shalabayev is accused of embezzling $300 million in Ukraine.

In 2011 Shalabayev was sentenced to 18 months in prison for contempt of court by the High Court in London.
