KazAtomProm is to buy a stake in RosAtom’s enrichment facility by the end of 2011, Tengrinews.kz reports. This was announced at the signing of the bilateral agreement on peaceful use of nuclear energy. Rosatom's Director General Sergey Kirienko told journalists on his company’s’ plans of cooperation with Kazakhstan. “We have large-scaled commercial plans. KazAtomProm is to buy a stake in an enrichment facility based in Novouralsk. We came up with a joint action plan. According to the schedule, this project is to be completed by the end of the year. And as a result large-scaled uranium enrichment facility will be launched in the Russian territory”, Mr. Kirienko said. “We are buying 5000 SWU in the JV. This means that 6 000 tons of uranium can be processed into 600 tons of nuclear fuel. This much fuel can feed 30 MW reactors”, KazAtomProm Chairman Vladimir Shkolnik said. Early this year KazAtomProm Chairman Vladimir Shkolnik briefed that the overall uranium production in 2010 made up 17803 tons. And KazAtomProm sold 9000 tons of uranium oxide concentrate, 33% up against 2009. State-owned national atomic company Kazatomprom is Kazakhstan’s sole organisation for uranium mining; reprocessing and export & import operations.
