Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev and his South Korean counterpart Lee Myung-bak have launched construction of the Balkhash thermal power plant located on the south-west shore of the Balkhash Lake close to Ekibastuz coal mine. “We have gathered together to launch construction of one of the most important industrial facility for Kazakhstan. Further industrialization isn’t conceivable without new power generating facilities. We have been suffering from power shortages in the South of Kazakhstan for quite a while. With this facility placed in operation, Kazakhstan will enjoy independence in terms of power supply”, President Nazarbayev said at the ceremony to launch construction works. According to President Nazarbayev, Kazakhstan’s authorities “have been trying to accelerate the project and remove all the barriers”. He also elaborated that the South Korea’s project portfolio in Kazakhstan exceeds $8 billion. Kazakhstan President emphasized that that the coal-fed power plant will be a paragon of environment friendliness. The two presidents laid a time capsule to be stored in the to-be-constructed power plant. “This power plant should bear the name of the two presidents”, Nazarbayev jokingly said. Tengrinews.kz reported earlier that the first two power generating units of the thermal power plant are to be commissioned in 2013, with the other two units being placed into operation in 2016. The design capacity of the power plant is 2 640 megawatt. The facility will be located on the south-west shore of the Balkhash Lake close to Ekibastuz coal mine. The project is carried out by South Korea’s KEPCO and Samsung and the Kazakhstan’s Samruk - Energo.
