Around 200 employees of CAPE Industrial Services, a subcontractor at Kashagan, went on strike this weekend in Atyrau. The company works on D Island of Kazakhstan’s oil field Kashagan. The situation has been stabilized, MGorod.kz writes citing Atyrau oblast Department of State Labor Inspection.

“The situation has been stabilized. Experts of our department and first deputy Akim (Governor) of the oblast Gumar Dyussembayev went to the artificial island D to settle the situation and perform explanatory work. The employees will receive compensations and I think we will reach a consensus,” acting head of the Department Salavat Ischai said.

According to him, construction and assembling works at Kashagan have been completed and the jobs are being cut by Agip and its subcontractors.

According to official sources the contracts of many of the employees are expiring and they have been properly notified of that one month prior to the expiry dates. However, some of the employees disagree and are demanding compensations.

Unofficial sources say that many of the employees are forced to resign.

“But the released workers should not be worried. After their contracts are expired, they will be registered by the oblast department for coordination of employment and social programs. They will not be left jobless,” Ischai said.

The official representative of Atyrau oblast prosecutor’s office Aslan Nurgaliyev reported that the striking workers of CAPE Industrial Services wrote a collective letter request compensations.

The workers were also complaining that they did not receive any termination notice. “But those 200 people who went on strike received notifications on termination of their contracts yesterday and today. Other employees are being notified,” the official said.

The prosecutor’s office has initiated a check into the company's observance of the labor legislation, Nurgaliyev said. “The situation is stable now. The employees have gone back to work. The compensations will be paid. The employers will make recalculations and the required amounts will be paid,” he added.

On July 9 deputy prosecutor and first deputy prosecutor of the oblast flew to the island and came to this agreement with the workers who signed their notifications.
