A Celebration of Wales and the Welsh People is taking place in Astana Opera on February 27, Tengrinews reports.

The concert is dedicated to Saint David's Day, the feast day of Saint David, the patron saint of Wales in the United Kingdom. Saint David's Day has been celebrated by Welsh people since late Middle Ages on March 1 in remembrance of the death of Saint David.

This is one of the most important days for Welsh communities all around the world, when various cultural and social events take place.

The concert in Astana Opera will begin with the magical sounds of harp, a traditional music instrument of Wales.

Astana Opera Male Voice Choir conducted by Ross Clarke along with Yerzhan Dautov will perform Welsh songs.

“We have included folk songs into the program to convey the Welsh tint and the origins of the Welsh culture. One song is called Sosban fach (Little Saucepan), and its simple plot tells about the troubles of a housewife. Initially, children performed this song, but then it was rewritten for adult voices. Another folk song is Calon lan (Pure Heart) a lyrical motive. It is about a man who gives up everything he has and asks only to leave him his motherland and the pure heart,” Clarke said.

During the concert, the world premiere of Llansteffan Bridge written by the famous British composer Simon Wills will take place. Simon Wills created it after his visit to Kazakhstan. The musician was impressed by the Kazakh customs and traditions, by the people and the country in general. In his work, he tried to combine Kazakh and Welsh national musical motifs.

For many years, Simon Wills was a member of the London Symphony Orchestra and solo trombonist of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. He was often invited as a soloist to the Royal Opera House, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Berliner Staatsoper unter den Linden, the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, and the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra.

Apart from that, the concert will feature Astana Opera harpist Lyubov Tkachenko, Pres Y Ddraig Brass Quintet from the UK, Haileybury Astana Childrens Choir conducted by Jonathan Richards and Haileybury International Community Choir.

The concert will start at 7 p.m. in Astana Opera House located on Kunayev street, at the crossing with Turan avenue.

The tickets can be purchased online via biletiastana.kz and the official website of the theater. The price starts at 1,500 tenge ($8.1).

For those who do not have a chance to attend the concert, Tengrinews TV will provide “first row seats” via online streaming.
