Kazakhstan-made short film to be screened in Cannes

Bastau (Source) short film, directed by young Kazakhstan filmmaker Sharipa Urazbayeva, was included into the official selection of the Short Film Corner of the 66th International Cannes Film Festival, Express K reports. Madiyar Kassymov, producer of the film, will travel to France together with Urazbayeva. Yerbolat Toguzakov, who is known for his participation in Yermek Tursunov’s Shal movie, is starring in the short. Source is a parable, an allusion to the Classical Greek myth of Sisyphus. Toguzakov’s character covers huge distance on a bicycle to water a piece of land in a harsh desert. According to Kassymov, the short was filmed in Almaty oblast and scorching heat was the main problem for the actor. Urazbayeva and Kassymov study in Zhurgenov Kazakh National Arts Academy at Higher Courses for Directors and their instructor is a famous Georgian filmmaker and scriptwriter Irakly Kvirikadze, who is famous for his scripts for Luna Papa, The Thousand and One Recipes of a Chef in Love (starring Pierre Richard), Andersen. A life without Love by Eldar Ryazanov, the newspaper writes. The 2013 Cannes Festival will be held on May 15-26. The Great Gatsby by Australian filmmaker Baz Luhrmann starring Leonardo DiCaprio, will open the Festival. Zulu crime thriller, starring Orlando Bloom and directed by Jerome Salle will close the Festival. French actress Audrey Tautou will host the opening and closing ceremonies of the Cannes Film Festival. Steven Spielberg will preside over the jury for the 66th Cannes Film Festival. American actress Nicol Kidman, Japanese filmmaker Naomi Kawase, British scriptwriter and filmmaker Lynne Ramsay, Romania’s director Christian Mundzhiu, Indian actress Vidya Balan and French actor Daniel Otey are going to be the jury of the Festival.
