Kazakh film The Owners directed by Adilkhan Yerzhanov won two awards at film festivals in the United States and Poland, Tengrinews reports.

At the international Warsaw Film Festival the film won the “Free Spirit Competition”, described by the festival as an award “for independent, innovative, rebellious films from all over the world”. 15 other films were competing for the main prize in this category but it was the Kazakh film that became victorious. Overall, there were 10 categories the festival offered for premiere films, allowing hundreds of directors, producers and film actors from all over the world to visit the event.

Also, the Kazakh film received “Gold Plaque Special Mention for Originality” at the 50th Chicago International Film Festival’s International Feature Film Competition. The Festival is among the most respected and long-running film festivals in the world. It is known for discovering widely acclaimed directors, such as Martin Scorsese, John Carpenter and Wim Wenders.

World premiere of The Owners took place in Cannes 2014. Filmed in the genre of absurd drama with elements of caricature of reality, the movie received high praise from critics and continues to do so. The movie was shown in various other festivals in Slovakia, the Netherlands, Poland, Singapore, South Korea and Russia.

The Owners tells a story of two brothers and their sister, who lose their house because of the corrupt system in the country. A local man evicts them from their home with the support of his relative – the district policeman. The young people have no relatives who can stand up for them. Nevertheless, they are not going to leave the house. They are ready to fight for it.
