The $100 thousand dubbing project is the third Hollywood film translated into Kazakh in 2014. Timur Balymbetov, the dubbing director, worked on a foreign blockbuster film for the first time. Despite being new to the genre, Balymbetov had his own vision of what the voice actors had to do in working on Gurdians. There were over 20 voice actors involved in the project. The director said that for him it was important to have actors that were in some ways similar to the characters they were dubbing. For example, Gulnaz Auesbayeva had some resemblance with Gamora (Zoe Saldana). “Gulnaz is very similar in her disposition to Gamora. We completed most of the scenes in one take. Some parts of the Kazakh dubbing sounded even better than the original text," Balymbetov said.

The voice actress Auesbayev admitted that it was the first time she worked on dubbing action scenes. Earlier, she voiced Maleficent of the same name Disney movie. “There were no difficulties. I was quite comfortable with the voicing. I was glad to work with this team and happy to hear positive feedback on my work,” Auesbayev said.

Timur Piyaz voiced the protagonist Peter Quill. Erzhan Zharylkasynov gave his voice to Rocket. Drax was voiced by Ruslan Senkebayev. Vin Diesel’s character Groot spoke with the voice of Baurzhan Kaptagai and Ronan was voiced by Beibut Kamaranov.

In the past four years, Guardians of the Galaxy is the ninth film translated into Kazakh. With every new foreign film dubbed into Kazakh, many ask why these dubbed films have a limited screening and mostly only during the hours that are not popular among moviegoers.

Baurzhan Baibek, First Vice-Chairmna of the ruling Nur Otan party, who watched Guardians in Kazakh during the premier in Almay said: “We are working with all the movie theaters. The films are scheduled for prime time, but in cases when not many people are coming or when there is little audience during the first several days of the screenings, the movies theaters, being private businesses, reschedule the films depending on their popularity. If there are a lot of people coming to see a film, then it can be screened during prime-time for months. It is a double-sided issue. We think that to solve this issue we have to create more public awareness. At the moment, our goal is to provide advertisements so that people would see that Kazakh dubbing is a high quality beautiful language and come to see the film,” Baibek said.

Guardians of the Galaxy tell the story of Peter Quill who steals a orb that belonged to villainous Ronan. Peter finds himself in an inter-galactic prison. In order to secure his freedom, Quill reluctantly joins forces with alien bandits Drax, Gamora, Rocket and Groot to form an alliance of misfits known as the Guardians of the Galaxy, and with the all-powerful villain Ronan hunting the orb, the fate of the universe is in their hands.
