The soloists of Astana Opera are participating in the international contest in Verona, Italy, Tengrinews reports citing the press-service of Astana Opera. The international contest of opera singers is taking place on November 4-10 in Verona city, Italy. The participants from 40 countries, including Kazakhstan, were selected beforehand during auditions. The elimination round was held on November 4-6, the contestants performed parts from La boheme by Giacomo Puccini and Maria Stuarda by Gaetano Donizetti. The contest's final was held on November 7-8. The winners will sign a contract to perform in the Arena di Verona theater during winter 2014. The competition is held once every two years under the patronage of UNESCO. Paolo Gavazzeni, Art Director of the Arena di Verona festival, chairs the contest. Director of the International Institute for Opera and Poetry and chairman of the UNESCO in Verona Gianfranco de Bosio, who initiated the award for the contest more than 20 years ago, is one of the jury members at the festival. Art Director of Astana Opera's opera troupe Gyuzel Khaibulina has been a jury member at the international opera singing competition for more than 10 years. Gyuzel Khaibulina said that countries all over the world, be it the United States, Japan, RSA, Australia, England, a Scandinavian country or an Eastern European country, held preliminary auditions and selected their best candidates to participate in the semi-final and final contests that take place in Verona. Before the competition Khaibulina auditioned more than 90 people in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Astana. This year she represents Sundet Baigozhin, Medet Chotabayev, Galina Cheplakova and Alfia Karimova, the lead soloists of Astana Opera. "Every artist dreams to be part of Arena di Verona. I believe, the level of our singers is very high; especially I would single out Medet Chotabayev and Sundet Baigozhin’s parts of Rodolfo and Marcello. Alfia Karimova has big chances to win; she learned a huge part of Maria Stuarda specially for the contest. I wish that the performance, even in the half-concert form, would be presented in Astana after the contest ends," Gyuzel Khaibulina shared. She pointed out that opera singers from Italy, South Korea and China were especially strong competitors. Several of Astana Opera singers performed very successfully in Europe in the beginning of the season. Medet Chotabayev sang the part of Rodolfo in Luisa Miller opera in Italy, Alfia Karimova successfully performed her solo concert at the Teatro del Liceo in Barcelona. Artur Kaipkulov represented Astana Opera at the Elena Obraztsova Competition, then he performed at the Russian House in Paris with his solo concert and he will participate in the Bogacheva contest in St. Petersburg later in November.
