Kazakhstan film Nagima directed by Zhanna Issabayeva has won the Grand-Prix at the Deauville Asian Film Festival in France, Tengrinews reports.

Two movies -- Han Gong-ju by South Korean director Su-jin Lee and Ugly by Anurag Kashyap from India -- were awarded with the Jury Prize. And the Critic's Prize went to South Korean film Han Gong-ju as well.

French film director Claire Denis chaired the jury that included the actor and scriptwriter Rene Bonnell, actress and producer Roxane Mesquida and actor Samir Huesmi.

The premier of Nagima took place during the 15th Busan International Film Festival. The movie was screened in the Gala Presentation session.

Zhanna Issabayeva’s fourth feature film Nagima engulfed the viewers at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival with its grim reality in the framework of the Forum category.

Nagima is a story of two girls who graduate from an orphanage and struggle to survive. The protagonist Nagima works in a café and makes only barely enough to pay the rent of the shabby house they live in and help her pregnant roommate Anya. Nagima steals leftovers from her work and tries to keep her little world together.

When Anya dies in childbirth, Nagima despite her stubborn desire to keep the newborn baby girl away from the same fate, witnesses her taken away to an orphanage. Left all alone, she tries to find her mother. Her mother rejects her once again and the circle of hopelessness seems to tighten around Nagima.

The film Nagima was the first ever roles for the lead actresses Dina Tukubayeva and Mariya Nezhentseva. The cast also included the actress Galina Pyanova, ArtiShok theatre actors and Nazar Sharkhan, who played in Zhol movie.

The Deauville Asian Film Festival (the Festival du film asiatique de Deauville) takes place annually in Deauville, France since 1999 and focuses on Asian cinema. A film competition was added to the festival in 2000 and a video competition in 2002.
