Eurasia Film Festival in Almaty announces winners

The winners of the 9th International Film Festival Eurasia that was held on September 16-20 in Almaty have been announced, Tengrinews reports.

The film In Bloom (Georgia, France, Germany) by directors Nana Ekvtimishvili and Simon Gross was awarded with the Grand-Prix, the main prize of the festival. The movie tells the story of two 14-y.o. girls who lived in the 1990s in Georgia, the country that just gained independence. The film brings up the first disappointments, early marriage and men's domination. The jury chairman Jane Campion handed the award to the film's producer.

The movie Bauyr (Little Brother) by Kazakhstan director Serik Aprymov won the Best Director award. Actors Carlo Cecchi (for Italian film Miele) and Koh Jia Ler (for Singapore's movie Iloilo) received the Best Actor awards. The Best Actress awards were given to Elahe Hezari for her role in the Iranian film Don't worry Sarah and Jordis Triebel for the German film My Sisters.

Besides the international jury, prestigious cinema critics from FIPRESCI (International Federation of Film Critics) and NETPAC (The Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema) were evaluating the films at the festival. FIPRESCI awarded the Saudi Arabian film Wadja by Haifaa al-Mansour, and NETPAC selected the Bauyr movie by Kazakhstan's Serik Aprymov and the film Waiting for the Sea by Bakhtyar Khudojnazarov of Tajikistan.

The special prize of the International Film Festival Eurasia was given to the producer of the Russian film Shame Vladimir Malyshev. Besides, the film affairs expert Philippe Gallado was awarded for his contribution into promotion of the Kazakhstan film industry at the international arena.

The results of the Spotlight: New Kazakh Cinema-2013 contest were also announced. The winners are: Adilkhan Yerzhanov with Aliyushka project and Serik Abishev with Ademoka project. Tulegen Baitukenov and Anton Mitnev received special prizes.

Days of Russian and Kyrgyz Cinema, Central Asia Panorama and Dynamic Kazakh Cinema sections were part of the festival this year, besides its traditional screenings.

The Workshop for the film experts was held by French film critic and programmer of the San Sebastian Film Festival Matthieu Darras for the first time in Kazakhstan. The directing master-class was held by American film director and film producer Chuck Russell and Screenwriting master-class was given by American screenwriter David Franzoni.

The festival has changed its logo this year. The horse rider was replaced with a winged panther that is a symbol of Almaty city.

Yermek Amanshayev, President of Kazakhfilm Kazakhstan national studios, thanked the guests and reminded that the Eurasia Film Festival will be celebrating its jubilee edition next year.
