Tengrinews.kz – November has brought Kazakhstan’s first wave of mass road accidents as snow, ice, and strong winds hit several regions.

One of the incidents occurred on the Astana–Petropavlovsk highway, where four vehicles — a Toyota Carina E, Niva, Kia Rio, and BMW X5 — collided in a chain reaction. According to preliminary data from the patrol police, the accident began when the Toyota driver failed to keep a safe distance on a slippery road. Fortunately, no one was injured, but all cars sustained mechanical damage.

Due to worsening weather conditions, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has issued a warning to motorists. Aidyn Orazbayev, head of the Administrative Police Committee, called on drivers to remain extremely cautious and adapt their driving to the icy conditions.

How to avoid accidents in icy weather

With the arrival of frost and snow, authorities remind drivers to adjust both their vehicles and driving habits:

  • Switch to winter tires immediately. Summer tires lose elasticity and grip in sub-zero temperatures, making even advanced safety systems ineffective.
  • Check your car. Make sure brakes, headlights, wipers, and washer fluid (anti-freeze type) are all in working order.
  • Increase following distance. Stopping distances on icy roads are several times longer — keep at least double the usual gap.
  • Avoid sudden movements. Abrupt braking, acceleration, or steering can cause skidding. Drive smoothly and predictably.
  • Reduce speed. Lower speeds give more time to react and prevent loss of control.
  • Be careful on bridges and overpasses. These sections freeze faster than regular roads, as they are exposed to cold air from all sides.

Police urge drivers to prepare for winter now to ensure safe travel during the season.
