Tengrinews.kz - South Korean rapper Psy, best known worldwide for his viral hit “Gangnam Style,” has come under investigation, citing Yonhap News Agency.
The artist is accused of illegally obtaining prescriptions for the psychotropic medications Xanax and Stilnox from Seoul National University Hospital since 2022 without in-person visits. Authorities also allege that his manager and other individuals collected the drugs on his behalf.
Under South Korean law, prescriptions cannot be issued or collected by proxy. Police reportedly learned of the violations through an anonymous tip.
Psy has denied the allegations, insisting that his treatment was conducted remotely.
His label, P Nation, released a statement on Thursday acknowledging that third parties had, in some cases, collected the prescribed sleeping pills on Psy’s behalf, calling the incident a “clear mistake and negligence.”
“Psy has been diagnosed with a chronic sleep disorder and is taking sleeping pills as prescribed by his doctor. But there was no proxy prescription, though third parties received the drugs on behalf of him in some cases,” the agency said.
Xanax and Stilnox are classified as psychotropic drugs, typically prescribed for sleep disorders, anxiety, and depression. Both carry a high risk of dependency, and regulations require that they be dispensed only after an in-person consultation.
