The National Assembly of Vietnam elected the new president during the first day of its 8th session of the 15th legislature. Lawmakers unanimously supported Cuong's candidacy. He will lead the country until 2026.

General Luong Cuong is a permanent member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Communist Party. Born in 1957, he has held various positions in the command of one of the provinces since 1975, as well as serving as a political officer in the main political department of the Vietnam People's Army and later in an army corps and military district.

On September 2, the Head of State congratulated former president To Lam on the Independence Day of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
