Tengrinews.kz - General Luong Cuong has been elected as the new president of Vietnam, according to Vnanet.vn.

The National Assembly of Vietnam elected the new president during the first day of its 8th session of the 15th legislature. Lawmakers unanimously supported Cuong's candidacy. He will lead the country until 2026.

The elections took place following the appointment of the former president, To Lam, as the General Secretary of the ruling party after the death of the previous General Secretary, Nguyen Phu Trong.

General Luong Cuong is a permanent member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Communist Party. Born in 1957, he has held various positions in the command of one of the provinces since 1975, as well as serving as a political officer in the main political department of the Vietnam People's Army and later in an army corps and military district.

It is worth noting that in August 2023, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev visited Vietnam and met with Nguyen Phu Trong.

On September 2, the Head of State congratulated former president To Lam on the Independence Day of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
