The principal dancers of Bolshoi Theatre of Moscow, Russia Alexander Volchkov and Yekaterina Shipulina will perform in Astana Opera House for the first time ever on September 23, Tengrinews reports citing the press-service of Astana Opera.
The Russian ballet dancers will take part in the staging of Aram Khachaturyan’s Spartacus ballet, directed by the outstanding Russian choreographer Yuri Grigorovich. Alexander Volckov will star as Crassus, and Yekaterina Shipulina will perform Aegina’s part.
Outstanding Kazakh ballet dancer of Astana Opera House Bakhtiyar Adamzhan will perform the main part of Spartacus, and leading soloist of Astana Opera Madina Basbayeva will star as Phrygia.
The leading ballet designer Simon Virsaladze, known since the Soviet era, worked on the stage design of the historical ballet.
Astana Opera Choir led by the Honored Artist of Kazakhstan Yerzhan Dautov and the Symphony Orchestra conducted by the Honored Artist of Kazakhstan Aidar Abzhakhanov will take part in the performance.
It is not the first time for Russian soloists to be in Astana, but it will be their first perfomance in Astana Opera House. "We are confident that this is a beautiful theater and a wonderful troupe. We hope it will be a great pleasure to work together," the dancers said.
When speaking about Aegina, Yekaterina Shipulina said she could talk long about her. "The only thing I will say is that when leaving the stage after each performance, I understand that I give all of myself to the audience, in return for the warmth of their souls and the incredible emotions. I wish all the audience to open your heart to the art," Yekaterina Shipulina said.
The story of Spartacus ballet takes place during the Roman Empire. The ballet features dramatic gladiator fights and sensual dances of ladies of pleasure. The audience will witness the tragedy and trials of the loving Spartacus and Phrygia at the times of Crassus’ rule.
Spartacus was first premiered in Leningrad Theater of Opera and Ballet, current Mariinsky Theatre, on December 27, 1956. It was directed by one of the most popular choreographers of the Soviet era Leonid Yakobson.
It was first staged at the Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow in 1958 directed by Igor Moiseev. However, the 1968 staging choreographed by Yury Grigorovich received the greatest acclaim.
The ballet will start at 7 p.m. in Astana Opera House as a part of the First Silk Road International Festival. The theater is located on Kunayev Street, at the crossing with Turan Av.
The tickets for the ballet can be purchased online via biletiastana.kz, biletbar.kz and in booking offices in Astana Opera House and Kazakhstan Central Concert Hall located at #10/1 Orynbok Street at the square across from Akorda.
