Boris Asafiev's Fountain of Bakhchisarai will be premiered on the stage of Astana Opera House on April 11 and 12, Tengrinews reports.
With music composed by Boris Asafiev and choreography directed by Rostislav Zakharov, the ballet first premiered in Saint Petersburg, (then Leningrad) in 1934 at the Kirov Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet (now the Mariinsky Theatre).
The story centers around the Polish Princess Maria, Tatar Khan Girey and his wife Zarema. Cruel Tatar Khan Girey invades Poland and during one of his raids, he attacks the Polish castle, where a birthday celebration of Maria, the daughter of the house, takes place. Maria is the only one who survives and for whom Khan Girey then deeply falls in love.
The Khan and his warriors then return to Bakhchisaray Palace where Zarema, his harem favorite, awaits him. However, being mesmerized by the beauty of the Polish Princess, the Khan ignores everyone including Zarema, who obviously loves him.
That same evening, the Khan comes to Maria and begs her for love, but she rejects him. Khan Girey humbly leaves and at night, Zarema visits Maria in her bedroom and tells Maria to deny the Khan. While Maria tries to explain that she is indifferent to him, Zarema sees the Khan's hat forgotten in Maria's room and being inflamed with jealousy, kills the captive.
The ballet based on the poem of Alexander Pushkin is staged by Kazakh choreographers Tursynbek Nurkaliyev and Galia Buribayeva as well as Italian set designer Ezio Frigerio. Costumes are made by Franka Squarciapino and Sofia Tasmagambetova.
This is the second time Kazakh and Italian masters work together. A year ago, they presented Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake ballet to the Kazakh audience, which had a great success.
Italian lighting designer Vinicio Cheli was invited to work with the light, while the projections designer Sergio Mettali will be responsible for special effects.
Ballet choreography will demonstrate the contrast between classical and Eastern dances, thus highlighting the diversity of the two worlds.
"The difficulty of this play is not only in jumps and supports, it also requires a great acting skill. It is especially true for the three major characters - Maria, Zarema and Khan Ghirei . We have revised the dances in the second act, which are a dance with trays, dance with bells, variation of the second wife and the scene with the prisoners, we made these scenes more colorful and spectacular,” the artistic director of the ballet Tursynbek Nurkaliyev said.
The entire ballet troupe of Astana Opera is involved in the performance. Madina Basbayeva and Nazerke Aimukhametova will star as Maria. Aygerim Beketaeva, Gaukhar Usina and Anel Rustemova will play Zarema. Role of Ghirei will be played by Baurzhan Mekembayev, Zhanibek Imankulov and Zhandos Aubakirov. Bakhtiyar Adamzhan, Eldar Sarsembayev, Serik Nakyspekov and Arman Urazov will play commander Nurali.
Honored Artist of Kazakhstan Aidar Abzhakhanov will take part in the performance as the music director of the production and conductor.
The ballet will start at 7 p.m. The tickets are available for purchase online on the official website of the theatre or on biletiastana.kz. The price starts at 500 tenge ($2.7).
