Tengrinews.kz – A large-scale rescue operation in Turkistan Region ended with the dramatic rescue of a 28-year-old Russian climber, while his Uzbek companion tragically died.
According to Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Emergency Situations, the alarm was raised on September 1 after relatives reported the two young men missing. They had set out from Shymkent on August 31 but failed to return.
Search teams located them near Sairamsu Peak in the Sairam-Ugam National Park at an altitude of about 2,200 meters. Rescuers eventually established voice contact with the Russian survivor, Andrey Orlov, who had been stranded on a rocky ledge for three days without food or water. He told them his partner, 29-year-old Akmal Makhkamov from Uzbekistan, had fallen into a gorge and suffered fatal injuries.
Orlov was evacuated on horseback to the base of the mountain, where his relatives were waiting. Makhkamov’s body was also recovered and handed over to police.

The complex operation involved 18 rescuers, five vehicles, a Kazaviaspas helicopter, drones, forestry specialists, police units, and five professional climbers from Kazakhstan’s Mountaineering Federation. Due to the rugged terrain, the helicopter could not land close to the site, forcing rescuers to continue on foot with climbing gear to reach the men.
