Many Kazakhstan citizens are concerned about the Mayan calendar’s ‘apocalyptic’ prediction that the world may end on December 21, 2012. There are people in Kazakhstan who belive in this and many of them have gone from words to actions. People have started stocking up on candles, matches, croutons, grits and canned food, NUR.KZ reports. "These goods are sold out in several hours," one of the sellers said. He said that the sales went up prior to the global catastrophe day. Even though there are not many of those who truly take the mythical date seriously, many residents buy goods ‘just in case’. According to Express-K, the coming apocalypse turns into good profits for owners of Magnum and Arzan supermarkets. Buyers prone to mass psychosis are buying everything in bulk and batches. There is no statistics of the number of people in Kazakhstan who believe in the "apocalypse" predicted by Maya. But there is some information on the approximate number of people in several countries expecting the cataclysm: around 22 percent of the population in Turkey, China and the U.S., a little less in South Africa and Argentina and around 7-8 percent of citizens of Belgium and France.
