Cycling: Vinokourov suggested to hold Tour of Almaty and invite world famous cyclists

A professional bicycle race with the famous cyclists from all over the world could be held in Almaty next autumn, Tengrinews.kz reports. Akhmetzhan Yessimov, Akim (Mayor) of Almaty city said this at the closureof the City Day bike ride in Almaty. Olympic champions Ilya Ilyin (weightlifting) and Alexandre Vinokourov (cycling) took part in the bike ride. “Our Olympic champion Alexandre Vinokourov suggested holding the Tour recently. We are considering organizing the professional bicycle race in Almaty. We should arrange everything for the Tour decently,” the Akim said. Vinokourov said that the race could be held in September 2013 or at the end of June. “We could discuss the dates with the International Cycling Federation and find the one most suitable for them,” Vinokourov said. “I think that we will be able to invite 15 continental cycling teams to our city. Other World Cycling Championships might be also held in Astana or in Almaty in future. This is an ambitious project called to help development of cycling in Kazakhstan,” the champion said answering a correspondent’s question. The record number of citizens took part in the Almaty bike ride on the City Day. Akhmetzhan Yessimov congratulated Vinokourov on his birthday and Ilya Ilyin on his wedding after the bike ride. The Akim presented the weightlifter with a Scott bicycle so that the athlete could take part in the bike rides more often. Vinokourov got a souvenir ship. The cyclist, in his turn, presented Akim with the helmet that the champion wore when he won the 2012 Olympic Games. “Dear Friends, today I’ve seen many of you riding without helmets, and our Akim has done the same. Your health – is the what's most important! Please, wear your helmets. I will give you my own,” Vinokourov said presenting Yessimov with his helmet.
