Serik Akhmetov appointed Kazakhstan's Prime-Minister

Serik Akhmetov has been appointed new Prime-Minister of Kazakhstan, Tengrinews.kz reports citing President’s press-service. All three parliamentary fractions of the Majilis (Lower Chamber of the Parliament) -- 107 deputies -- approved Serik Akhmetov proposed by President Nursultan Nazarbayev as a candidate for this position. “In the meeting Nursultan Nazarbayev expressed gratitude to Karim Massimov for his work and introduced Serik Akhmetov as a candidate for the position of Kazakhstan’s Prime-Minister. Majilis deputies unanimously supported Serik Akhmetov for the position of Prime-Minister of Kazakhstan,” the message states. Serik Akhmetov was born in Karaganda oblast on June 25, 1958. He graduated from the Technical University of Karaganda Metallurgic Plant and Russian Management Academy with a major in metallurgic engineering. Akhmetov is Doctor of Economics. Serik Akhmetov started his career at Karaganda Metallurgic Plant. In 1983-1990 he served in various departments of the Soviet Communist Party, he used to be first secretary of Karaganda Komsomol regional commission. In 1993-1995 he worked as an entrepreneur, then headed the Foreign Economic Relations Department of Karaganda Metallurgic Plant and was president of Central-Kazakhstan Commodities Market Ken Dala. After 2001 he held the following positions: Akim (Mayor) of Temirtau (a town near Karaganda), first deputy Akim of Astana, head of the State Inspection for Administrative Supervision and Personnel Policies at Kazakhstan President’s Administration, chairman of Kazakhstan’s Entrepreneurs and Employers Union, Minister of Transport and Communications, Deputy Prime-Minister of Kazakhstan. Starting from November 2009 he worked as Akim (Governor) of Karaganda oblast. In January 2012 he was appointed first deputy Prime-Minister of Kazakhstan. He was awarded with Kurmet and Parasat decorations, For Labor medal and various anniversary medals. He is married, has two children and two grandchildren.
