Karim Massimov appointed Kazakh Prime Minister

Nursultan Nazarbayev was inaugurated on April 29 in Astana.

In connection with the inauguration of the newly elected president, the Government has resigned as prescribed by the law. In addition, all the persons directly subordinate and accountable to the president have been relieved of their duties, including akims of Astana, Almaty, and all 14 Oblasts.

During his meeting with heads of Mazhilis factions in Akorda, Nazarbayev proposed Karim Massimov as the new Prime Minister of Kazakhstan. Nazarbayev said that Massimov was a fitting candidate for the goals set by the country.

Head of the parliamentary faction of the People’s Communist Party Vladislav Kosarev expressed support to the proposed candidate, saying he would make a balanced answer to the challenges laying ahead.

Head of Ak Zhol Democratic Party of Kazakhstan Azat Peruashev also supported the proposal, noting the crisis management experience of Karim Massimov.

Dariga Nazarbayeva, head of the faction of Nur Otan, also supported the proposal, noting the candidates contribution to establishing constructive relationships between the MPs and the government.

Then, the MPs unanimously voted in favor of Karim Massimov as the new Prime-Minister, thereby giving the president their approval to appoint him as Prime Minister in accordance with Article 56 of the Constitution of Kazakhstan.

Later the same day the president signed the relevant decree appointing Karim Massimov as Prime Minister.

“We are now starting a new program. I need to approve of the commission that will get to work immediately after the (May) holidays. In order not to waste time on entering into the swing of things, I think we should maintain the continuity of the Government. Karim Massimov is doing a good job, he has the capacity and the needed knowledge, and we can trust him to continue the ongoing work," Nursultan Nazarbayev was quoted as saying by his press service.

In response, Massimov thanked the President of Kazakhstan and the MPs for their trust.

Karim Masimov was born in 1965. He began his career as chief economist, head of the department of the Ministry of Labour. He then worked as a senior expert of the agency of the Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations of Kazakhstan in Urumqi (China). Massimov also held the position of Executive Director of Kazakh Trading House in Hong Kong. He was Chairman of the Board of Almaty Trade Finance and Halyk Savings Bank.

Over the years Massimov served as Minister of Transport and Communications, Deputy Prime Minister, Assistant to the President of the Kazakhstan. Since January 2007, he became Prime Minister of Kazakhstan and in September 2012 he was appointed head of the Presidential Administration. In April 2014, Karim Massimov was once again appointed Prime-Minister.
