A moratorium on commercial fishing of sturgeons at the Caspian Sea came into force on January 1, 2014, Tengrinews reports citing RIA Novosti. In December all five Caspian countries -- Kazakhstan, Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran and Turkmenistan -- agreed to stop commercial fishing of sturgeons for one year. Delegations of the five states took part in the meeting of the Commission for Water and Bio Resources of the Caspian Sea. It is expected that the Caspian states will later adopt a five-year moratorium on catching sturgeons. In the meanwhile, the Caspian states are finalizing a draft agreement on conservation and rational use of bio resources of the Caspian Sea. The document is going to be signed by the leaders of the five countries at the 4th Caspian Summit that is expected to be held in the second half of 2014 in Astrakhan, Russia. The Caspian Sea used to produced more than 90% of the world's sturgeon catch, but after the USSR collapsed, the sturgeon population was brought verge of annihilation by uncontrolled fishing and poaching.
