Wikipedia founder is expected to visit Kazakhstan in 2013, according to Rauan Kenzhekhanuly, founder of Wikibilim Foundation [an NGO to develop the Kazakh Wikipedia].
“We expected Jimmy Wales to come this year. Unfortunately, due to his busy schedule the visit has been postponed a few times. Another reason for postponement was our desire to prepare an interesting program. A couple of days ago we talked to Mr. Wales and he confirmed once again that he would visit Kazakhstan in 2013”, Mr. Kenzhekhanuly said.
According to him, Mr. Wales lauded the dynamic development of the Kazakh-language Wikipedia and promised to deliver some public lectures on the resource and on the Internet development trends.
Rauan Kenzhekhanuly informed that at the starting point of the project supported by Karim Massimov, the current Head of the President Administration, the number of entries in the Kazakh segment stood at 7 000, with only 4 editors. For the year and half the number of entries has grown 20 times to exceed 200 000, with the number of active editors reaching 230.
“The Kazakh segment has raised to the 25th position. The audience has also grown from 500 000 pages viewed a month to over 8 000 000 pages viewed. The record high level of 10 000 000 viewings was registered in September”, Mr. Kenzhekhanuly said.
In July 2011 Tengrinews.kz reported that Kazakhstan was ranked 75th by the number of entries.
