At the meeting of the Majilis (Lower chamber of the Kazakh Parliament) Committee for Social and Cultural Development, Prosecutor General’s Office representative reported higher level of suicides among village teens in comparison to their city peers, Tengrinews reports.

“I want to turn your attention to the trend that we are witnessing now. According to the statistics, there is more suicidal behavior and suicides not in cities, but in remote regions and villages. Over the past 6 month there have been 26 suicides in cities and 78 in rural regions and villages among underage youth,” Saule Aitbayeva of the Prosecutor General’s Office said.

Vice Minister of Healthcare and Social Development of Kazahstan Serikbol Mussinov also voiced the suicide statistics region-wise. “The highest rates per 100 thousand residents are as following: Kostanay Oblast – 42.5, Akmola Oblast – 36.4, East Kazakhstan Oblast – 31, West Kazakhstan Oblast – 36.4, Karaganda Oblast – 25.6 and Pavlodar Oblast – 25. The lowest number of suicides is recorded in Almaty (5.4), North Kazakhstan Oblast (10.6), Mangystau Oblast (12.5), Astana (12.9) and South Kazakhstan Oblast (13),” Mussinov said.

In this regard, the Ministry of Healthcare and Social Development has come up with a plan of social modernization that includes preventative measures to decrease the risk of suicide and drug abuse among teens. The plan has already been submitted for the state approval.

The plan suggested by the Ministry includes a number of preventative measures such as: diagnosing and monitoring of children and teens with psychological disorders and suicidal tendencies, strengthening the integration of psychological and emergency medical services, development of educational programs for the University Curriculum in Education and Medical departments, the development of educational materials for general public.

“The suggested plan of actions for prevention of suicides has 3 stages and is focused on early identification of symptoms of suicidal behavior,” the Vice Minister explained.
