Residents of Kok-Saiyek village of South-Kazakhstan Oblast have accused the local branch of FoodMaster company of polluting the local river with caustic soda and sulfuric acid, Otyrar.kz writes. According to the villagers, children frequently swim in the river that the plant discharges its wastes into. “It is hardly possible to forbid them? They swim anyway and then get covered with sores,” the local citizens said. Earlier the river provided water to hundreds of houses and was used for cattle and vegetables. But now there is some white and stinking slick foam on the water. “Whatever we start planting dries out. Chickens die. Cattle drinks the water and get sick,” a villager Valeriy Tsoi said. “We plant tomatoes and cucumbers. And everything gets rotten because of this water. Why are the authorities doing nothing?” Turgynbai Daubazarov said. The discontented citizens of Kok-Saiyek village have passed all their claims to the village Akim (Mayor) and representatives of FoodMaster. This is not their first application to the local authorities and management of Kazakhstan’s biggest dairy company. People received quite a cynical advice in response to their previous claims. “When we applied to the Director of FoodMaster with a request to suspend discharge of milk wastes, we were told that a very good harvest of corn is received on these wastes. Basically, we were told that we all had to go back to Khruschev times and grow corn,” a local citizen Venera Kim said. The representatives of FoodMaster have failed to reply why the toxic wastes are discharged into the river. The management just promised to build water-treatment facilities along the river by May.
