Sodium benzoate, a hazardous preservative, has been discovered in Kazakhstan-made milk, Tengrinews.kz reports citing Sharkan Mazhidenov, ex-Director of Almaty department of the Technical Regulation and Metrology Commission of Kazakhstan Ministry of Industry and New Technologies. The E211 additive is an allergenic agent and is able to behave as a carcinogen damaging DNA structure when consumed in large quantities. Mazhidenov said that back in September 2012 when he headed the department, milk samples were bought in Almaty’s stores. The samples were checked in the laboratory of Kazakhstan Food Academy. The research showed that milk produced by two Kazakhstan and two Russian factories contained sodium benzoate (benzoic acid). The expert explained that according to the technical rules such preservative was not allowed in milk. The results of the tests were sent to the Technical Regulation and Metrology Commission. Mazhidenov was planning to receive the permission for unscheduled checks of the producers who made the milk containing sodium benzoate. The expert also sent a letter to Kazakhstan Minister of Industry and New Technologies Asset Issekeshev. Mazhidenov said that those milk producers had already bought the equipment to control presence of the preservative in raw materials. He suggested that sodium benzoate could be added at milk farms with an intention to preserve the the raw milk but save money on cooling equipment. In the response letter Kazakhstan Ministry of Industry and New Technologies stated that the said milk products were checked in NUTRITEST laboratory in October 2012. However, the laboratory did not discover the E211 preservative. But the Ministry made a reservation by saying that the laboratory was not properly accredited for checking milk for admixtures content and the results of their tests could not be considered reliable. The Ministry continued by saying that it was working to establish an accredited testing laboratory. By Dmitriy Khegai
