The Wounded Angel, a new project of Kazakhstan's film director Emir Baigazin has been selected for production and distribution funding by the international Berlinale Residency fellowship program, Tengrinews.kz reports citing press-service of Kazakhfilm studio. An international jury of Clare Binns (Director of Programming and Acquisitions at City Screen, Great Britain), producer Cedomir Kolar (Asap Film, France) and Thomas Hailer (Berlinale Programme Manager, Germany) choose six directors and their projects. Bence Fliegauf from Hungary Glowing Wormhole, Alistair Banks Griffin from USA Therese (tentative title), Chile's Sebastián Lelio Greeting to the Sun, Elina Psykou from Greece Ivo & Sofia, Mexico's José Luis Valle, Operation Baby were selected for the funding along with Emir Baigazin's The Wounded Angel. The Berlinale Residency directors are staying in Berlin from August 15 to November 15, 2013. With script consultants from the Nipkow Programme and other experts from the industry, they are finalizing their screenplays. In a workshop towards the end of the Residency, their producers will also receive concrete feedback from experienced industry professionals and assistance in preparing the projects for the international market. In February 2014, the filmmakers will return to Berlin so they can present their projects with their producers to potential co-producers and financers at the Berlinale Co-Production Market. A number of the participants will also be given the opportunity to present their works at the Ibero-American Co-Production Meeting in Guadalajara in March 2014. The program is held for the second time and supports exclusively the production and distribution of feature films and feature-length documentaries, that have already earned the recognition at the A Class international film festivals. The Berlinale Director Dieter Kosslick comments: “With the Berlinale Residency, the Berlinale has successfully expanded its program to promote filmmakers. I’m delighted that in the initiative’s second year we’ll again be supporting international directing talents in developing their new projects.” Harmony Lessons of Emir Baigazin was the first Kazakhstan film included into the main program of the 2013 Berlinale Film Festival. The film won a Silver Bear for Artistic Achievement for its cinematographer Aziz Zhambakiyev and also got the prize of the Morgen Post newspaper. Harmony Lessons won the special jury prize for the Best Filmmaker’s Debut at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York and Grand-Prix of the Switzerland Film Festival in Basel. Before the Residency Program started Baigazin was a member of the jury of the Pardi di Domani program at the International Film Festival in Locarno, Switzerland. He also was a member of the jury at the 11th International Film Festival Eurasia in Almaty last week.
