Nazarbayev re-elected with more than 95% of vote: exit poll

04 april 2011, 00:33
Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev has been re-elected to another five-year term with almost 95 percent of the vote, AFP reports citing an exit poll.

The exit poll was conducted by an independent Almaty-based agency called the Association of Sociologists and Political Scientists.

The exit poll results were announced by the agency's chairperson Bakhytzhamal Bekturganova at a press-conference at midnight right after the elections.

The polling agency said Nazarbayev collected 94.82 percent of the vote in Sunday's election, an improvement on the 91.2 percent he picked up in his last re-election victory in 2005.

The other three candidates all received less than three percent of the vote, the Association of Sociologists and Political Scientists of Kazakhstan (ASIP) poll said.

Zhambyl Akhmetbekov, the head of the People's Party of Kazakhstan, a Kazakh Communist Party, received 1.57 percent of the vote and pro-government Senator Gani Kasymov 2.17 percent, ASIP said.

The environmentalist Mels Yeleusizov, who on Sunday admitted to voting for Nazarbayev, picked up 1.44 percent, said the study.

The Association polled 102 voting stations.

This is a preliminary data. The final exit-poll figures will be announced later on April 4.

Preliminary voter turnout stands at 89.9%, Kuandyk Turgankulov, Chairman of the Central Election Commission said. A total of 8 252 718 voters cast their vote.
