Two Canadians killed in Kabul attack: Foreign Ministry

18 january 2014, 10:58
Two Canadians are among those killed in an attack on a popular restaurant in Kabul, AFP reports according to the country's foreign minister.

The assault on the Taverna du Liban, which claimed at least 14 lives, was carried out by Taliban militants fighting against the Afghan government and US-led foreign forces in the country.

"At this point, we can confirm that two Canadian citizens have died in the attack," Foreign Minister John Baird said in a statement.

"On behalf of all Canadians, we extend our sincerest condolences to the families and friends of those who were killed and injured in this horrible and senseless act of terror."

Three UN staff members and the International Monetary Fund's representative in Afghanistan were also killed in the attack at the restaurant popular with foreigners.

"Acts of brutal terror cannot be allowed to go unpunished," Baird said.

"Those who perpetrated this act of violence and those who support the Taliban, who have claimed responsibility for the attack, must be held accountable."

One attacker blew himself up outside the restaurant while two gunmen stormed inside, mowing down staff and diners.
