Festival of Contemporary Ethnic Music Performers The Spirit of Tengri kicked off on STV channel. The organizers plan to unite contemporary musicians performing folk music in one contest.
The video demonstrates a participant of the project, a folk singer Juliana from the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). She was awarded with the title of the best Jew's harp player in the world in 2012. Jew's harp is an instrument found in different modifications in most of the countries, including Kazakhstan. It is one of the eldest music instruments. Its exact origin is not clear, however, some researchers say that Jew's harp could have appeared 5 thousand years ago at the territory of South Asia and spread later via Asia and Europe to Africa and Americas. Despite its common English name it has no particular connection with the Jewish people or Judaism. The instrument is also known as vargan and khomus. Kazakh ethic music also features one of the varieties of this instrument.
