The first charitable marathon Courage to be First in support of the children who suffer from infantile cerebral paralysis (ICP) was held in Almaty on May 27, Tengrinews.kz reports. Fitness club World Class Almaty along with Kazakhstan Automobile Company Astana Motors sponsored the event. The marathon started from Almaty Ski Jump Complex. About two thousand runners were registered prior to the marathon, both professional sportsmen and amateurs. There were several races: 2-, 9-, 21- and 42-kilometer long distances. To take part in the race the runners had to successfully undergo medical tests to make sure they don’t have any contraindications for physical exercises. The organizers initiative warming-up exercising before the race. The runners started the marathon without any delay, at 8:00 am. Akhmetzhan Yessimov, the Akim (Mayor) of the city supported the athletes. He run the 9-kilometer distance. The Akim said that it was not easy for him. “We haven’t held such a large-scale running event before. I’d like to congratulate you on this marathon. I’d like to hold such events more often. We need to promote healthy lifestyle,” Yessimov said. The traffic was restricted along the marathon race route, starting from Ski Jump Complex and to the Dynamo stadium. Police auto-brigade and emergency vehicles accompanied the runners. Fans and support teams were waiting for the runners at the end of the distance. Several city regions organized their own fan teams. There were several stores along the route where the participants and audience could get something to eat or drink. Those who have come to cheer up the runners had a chance to listen to the singer Alina Bektassova while the athletes were running their distances. 2-kilometer long race was held right at the Stadium. It had several categories: children aged 10-14 and handicapped runners. Roman Lyach won the first place in the race. Aleksey Gussarov won the 9-kilometer race. Zarina Mentayeva won the 21-kilometer race among women and Mikhail Denissov won the 21-km race among men. Yekaterina Shatkaya and Mikhail Krassipov won the 42-kilometer-long marathon. All the prize-winners were awarded with memorable Diplomas, medals and valuable prizes. Alim Sharipov, director of Almaty Marathon runners Club, said that the event was well-organized. However, there was one disadvantage to the race. There were too few age groups. “More than 20 people from our Club took part in the event. The oldest athlete was 77 years old. Our veterans are former masters of sport of the Soviet Union. However we can’t make old people compete with young ones. It is not right.” Sharipov said.
