Czech tourists survive Iceland bus sinking in lagoon: police

09 august 2011, 16:36
A group of tourists from the Czech Republic survived the sinking of their bus to the bottom of a lagoon in Iceland at the weekend, AFP reports, citing police Monday.

The eleven tourists, part of a group of 22 Czechs visiting Iceland, were on a bus that suddenly sunk while attempting to cross the Blautulon lagoon in the south of the country.

It is possible to cross the lagoon in a jeep and authorities believe the bus might have sunk because it was too heavy or because the driver took the wrong way across.

"The tourists left (the nearby town of Vik) this morning and headed back to Reykjavik. They will be flying back to the Czech Republic tomorrow evening," Gudmundur Ingi Ingason, the police chief in the town of Kirkjubaejarklaustur, told AFP.

They were rescued quickly after the accident, which happened on Saturday afternoon as the rest of the group watched in horror.

"Everyone got out safe and sound. A few people had little scratches and one woman had swallowed a little too much water, but nothing serious," Ingason said, adding it took only 51 seconds for the bus to be completely under water.

"Everyone was, of course, in a bit of a shock after the ordeal, but no significant injuries," he said.

Police divers retrieved most of the travellers' luggage from the bus.
