Kazakhstan skiers plan to gain 12-14 spots for the Sochi Olympic Games, Tengrinews.kz reports referring to Yerlan Kozhagapanov, chairman of the Sport and Physical Education Agency.

“The athletes will compete for 98 sets of Olympic medals in 15 events in the forthcoming 2014 Winter Olympic Games. 12 sets of medals will be available in cross-country skiing. We are planning to show our best results in 3-4 events of cross-country skiing. Our goal is to perform better than in Vancouver. The Vancouver Olympic Games results are our minimum goal,” Kozhagapanov said at the press-conference.

He said that the results of Kazakhstan skiers in the 2012-2013 season showed that Kazakhstan athletes “have good chances to perform successfully” at the forthcoming Olympics.

“However, a big work to qualify for the Olympics is still ahead of our national team. Kazakhstan skiers’ results in the current Olympic cycle suggest that our athletes’ competitiveness has gone up and this allows us to count on 12-14 Olympic spots in cross-country skiing,” the chairman of the Agency said.

He also said that the Agency was negotiating with Samruk-Kazyna Fund on provision of Kazakhstan national skiing team with all the required sports equipment. It has been decided to hire one of the world's best skiing equipment serviceman as well as doctors and massage therapists for the national skiing team.
