Roach rates Golovkin and Ward above Mayweather20 april 2015, 12:34
Hall of Fame and “Trainer of the Year” Freddie Roach has criticised Floyd Mayweather Jr and rated Gennady Golovkin and Andre Ward above the undefeated P4P boxer, Tengrinews reports citing BoxingScene.com.
Currently, Roach is training Manny Pacquiao for the upcoming highly anticipated fight against Mayweather Jr.
“I would like to train Floyd. He makes so many mistakes. He’s gifted but he makes a lot of mistakes. He rolls but he doesn’t counter. (…) This kid Mayweather has the talent to do it but he doesn’t finish the job. He’d be a much better fighter. The best thing he does is feint. He’s the best feinter in the world,” Roach said via Telegraph.
But despite praising the undefeated boxer, Roach was critical of the best boxer title attributed to Mayweather.
“Mayweather is undefeated so have to give him a little credit for that. But he has picked and chosen his opponents and I don’t think he’s fought enough competition to be considered the best. You have to fight the best to be the best, I feel. He’s ducked a lot of guys,” Roach told Daily Mail.
“Manny has had some devastating losses in his career but he is a realist. He understands that losing is part of the game and if you don’t think you are going to get knocked out in this sport, you have picked the wrong sport,” the trainer continued.
Roach has been working with Pacquiao for over 12 years. The 55 y.o. trainer battling the Parkinson’s diseases told Telegraph in an interview that preparing Pacquiao has been the only thing keeping him from suicidal thoughts.
Roach is also a trainer of the WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto.
In the middleweight division, Gennady Golovkin continuous his way to the world domination after obtaining the WBC Interim title in October 2014. Then, there is Andre Ward, who has returned after a year hiatus caused by legal issues with his former promotion company.
Roach was critical of Golovkin on numerous occasions and did not see him as a viable opponent for Cotto. Yet, unexpectedly Roach rated Golovkin and Ward higher than the welterweight Maywether.
“I’d put Ward and Triple G above Mayweather right now. They are very talented guys and very polished boxers,” Roach said.
It may as well be true. Golovkin who has not gotten his biggest fight yet, ducks no boxer offering a fight. His next fight is scheduled to May 16 against a southpaw American Willie Monroe Jr.
Ward’s new promotion company Roc Nation has not announced the name of the opponent for the fight on June 20 in Oakland, Califronia. But according to the HBO Boxing Analyst Max Kellerman, if Ward remains in the middleweight division for a year or longer, Golovkin can be his money fight.
