International expedition to K2 is bracing for the fourth ascent to Chogori. The goal of the ascent is to set a camp at the height of 8000 meters, Maksut Zhumayev, a Kazakh alpinist who is a part of the expeditions said.

“We have discussed the possibility of making this ascent the final one targeting the very top of K2. But then we decided against it. It is too dangerous. Our chief goal is to stay alive. We will spend a lot of efforts making this fourth ascent and we won’t have much strength lest to challenge to peak,” Zhumayev said.

The expedition is expecting the fourth ascent to take a whole week. “I have my personal goal to achieve during this ascent. My son will turn 3 on August 5. He is a big boy already. And I would really love to congratulate him on his birthday from the height of 8000 meters. I will do my best to achieve it,” Zhumayev shared.

Another news is that the team now has an competition. “We have heard of another international team getting ready to challenge Chogori from the southern side. That team includes Austrians, Germans and even alpinists from Spain. It is easier to ascent from the south, because there is more sun and less snow. Tens of expeditions ascend K2 from that side every year leaving their ropes behind. While our side of the mount has more atmospheric fallouts and less obvious traces of previous expeditions. But we have got more opportunities to act creatively here. And show our worth as sportsmen,” Zhumayev said.

The international expedition to K2 includes Maksut Zhumayev and Vassiliy Pivtsov from Kazakhstan, Gerlinda Kaltenbrunner from Austria, Ralf Dujmovits from Germany, Darek Zaluski from Poland and Tommy Heinrich from Argentina.

Chogori is located in the Karakorum mountain system in Kashmir province at the territory of Pakistan. Its height is 8,611 meters.
