Kazakhstan boxer Serik Sapiyev has been nominated for UNESCO Champion for Sport title, Vesti.kz reports.

UNESCO Champions for Sport are international celebrity sport personalities advocates for the United Nations agency UNESCO. This family of world-class athletes purveys UNESCO's message the world over. By the same token, they reflect UNESCO's concerns to promote the values of physical education and sports with a view of building a better future for younger generations.

UNESCO Champions for Sport are truly outstanding sport personalities, like Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher, football legend Pelé, Olympic Judo Champion David Douillet, Olympic Champion in pole-vaulting Serhiy Bubka, the legendary hockey player Viatcheslav Fetisov, the Ukrainian Boxing Champions Vitaliy and Wladimir Klitschko and WTA tennis player Justine Henin.

If the winner of the 2012 London Olympic Games Serik Sapiyev from Kazakhstan gets the honorary title he will become the 13th athlete in the world who bears it.

"This is an honorary title, and I'm, certainly, glad that UNESCO chose me. It is a great honor for me, I hope I will be suitable for the job. I'll do my best in advocate sports," the Kazakhstan boxer said.

Serik Sapiyev is an amateur boxer from Kazakhstan who won the world title in the light welterweight (-64 kg) division in 2005 and 2007 and Olympic Gold 2012 at welterweight. Sapiyev has signed up for the new AIBA professional league, called AIBA Pro Boxing (APB), which will launch in autumn 2013.
