Is Golovkin-Kovalev fight possible?17 november 2014, 19:45
Bernard Hopkins’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya said that the 49 y.o boxer could face Gennady GGG Golovkin in the light heavyweight, Tengrinews reports citing Vesti.kz.
But Hopkins lost his WBA, and IBF light heavyweight titles to Sergey Kovalev on November 8. After Kovalev’s victory, his promoter Kathy Duva stated that the undefeated Russian could face the WBA (Super), IBO and WBC Interim champion Gennady Golovkin of Kazakhstan. However, for Golovkin to face Kovalelov, according to Duva, the undefeated Kazakhstani boxer would have to go up in weight.
“We would entertain the thought of that fight, of course we would, especially if it’s a pay-per-view fight down the road. But I’m sure that Sergey’s not going to want to look forward to another difficult fight right off of the bat,” Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez said.
“But I’ve had him in the gym together with Gennady and he knows what he can do with Gennady and he has not improved in any aspect of his game as Gennady has and so, obviously, we would entertain that fight. It’s just a matter of the suits getting together and making it happen for the good of everybody,” Sanchez added.
“I don’t think, if you look at the size of Sergey Kovalev, that he’s fighting at any catch-weight with anybody. If they want to fight him, they will have to come up to his weight class. He’s holding three titles in the light heavyweight division. He’s a light heavyweight,” Duva told BoxingScene.com.
Duva did not rule out a possibility that Golovkin and Kovalev would fight against each other if Triple G decides to go up in the weight.
Meanwhile, Golovkin is preparing for his next fight against British boxer Martin Murray. Sanchez said that Murray would be the biggest fighter Golovkin had faced. But Murray, according to Sanchez, would not be a big issue for the Kazakhstani boxer.
“The fact that he fought Sergio, the fact that he fought Sturm, he’s not going to be intimidated. He’s going to come out and try to do what he did against Sergio, but Golovkin’s a special fighter. Golovkin’s one of those guys who come along every 20 years. There’ll be nobody at 154, 160 that can go 12 rounds with him,” Sanchez concluded.
The Golovkin-Murray fight is scheduled to February 21, 2015 in Monte Carlo, Monaco.
