Participants of the international expedition to K2 that includes two Kazakh alpinists might challenge the K2 summit even before August 9. "We have received weather forecasts: the weather will be rather good until Tuesday, August 9. It will be good enough to storm the peak, but it is still too early to discuss this,” Kazakh alpinist Maksut Zhumayev said. “The other expedition of 14 climbers that is ascending along the southern face of the mountain has already started the challenge of the K2 summit along the classical route. We hope that they are doing fine because clouds have started appearing from the south,” Zhumayev said. Zhumayev told that while spending the night in the third camp at the height of 7100 the team was cold even in spite of the warm clothes. Yesterday Gerlinda, Ralf, Darek and Tommy ascended to the height of 7600 meters to check the condition of the route and that the ropes are still there. They returned with good news: “They set the route for the next 700-800 meters to the height of 7800 m and left 500 more meters of rope up there. This is a good start for setting the fourth camp. In comparison with 2007 the route is better and there is less snow and a lot of old ropes, some of them even usable,” Zhumayev said. “My task was to go down to the second camp that is at the height of 6600 meters. There I picked up food for 3-4 days and all the needed equipment,” Zhumayev said. The goal of the fourth ascent the team is making now is to set the summit camp at the height of 8000 meters. The international expedition to K2 includes Maksut Zhumayev and Vassiliy Pivtsov from Kazakhstan, Gerlinda Kaltenbrunner from Austria, Ralf Dujmovits from Germany, Darek Zaluski from Poland and Tommy Heinrich from Argentina. Chogori is located in the Karakorum mountain system in Kashmir province at the territory of Pakistan. Its height is 8,611 meters.
