Ilya Ilyin wins gold at IV Weightlifting Spartakiad of Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan’s weightlifter and four-time world champion Ilya Ilyin has won gold at the IV Weightlifting Spartakiad of Kazakhstan that took place in Taldykorgan, Tengrinews reports citing Vesti.kz.


Kazakhstan’s weightlifter and four-time world champion Ilya Ilyin has won gold at the IV Weightlifting Spartakiad of Kazakhstan that took place in Taldykorgan, Tengrinews reports citing Vesti.kz.

Ilya Ilyin, who is also a two-time Olympic champion, competed in 105 kg weight league against two ranking Masters of Sports of Kazakhstan - Almas Uteshev and Zhasulan Kydyrbayev.

However, at the end it was Ilyin, who showed the best result. He lifted 431 kg in total - 191 kg in the clean and jerk and 240 kg in the snatch exercise.

Zhasulan Kydyrbayev came second with 418 kg (188+230) followed by Uteshev, who lifted the total of 410 kg (180+230).

Ilya Ilyin, a native of Kyzylorda city in southern Kazakhstan is the first and only two time Olympic Champion from Kazakhstan. He is currently the world and Olympic record holder in both the clean and jerk (233 kg) and the overall total (418 kg) in the 94 kg class. Since his debut at the World Weightlifting Championship in Doha, Qatar in 2005, Ilyin had been continuously winning gold at large competitions including Asian and World Championships and Olympic Games in 2008 and 2012.

In August, Kazakh athlete set a world record by lifting 250 kg in clean and jerk. 

He will be representing Kazakhstan in -105 kg class at the Rio Olympics 2016 in August. In fact, Ilyin is 99.9% sure that he will once again win gold for his country.
