One of the best referees Joe Cortez talked about Gennady Golovkin of Kazakhstan in his recent interview with OnTheRopes Boxing Radio, Tengrinews reports.

Commenting on the recent Golovkin-Rubio fight, Cortez said that the Mexican boxer “had seen his better days”. “Well Golovkin is a very good fighter, he’s a rising star. He’s got all the talent, he can punch, he can box, has good defense. Marco Antonio Rubio is a fighter that has seen his better days. I was surprised that he got stopped so quick and with a punch on the top of the forehead — it was not even on the chin, but that goes to show how hard Golovkin can punch,” Cortez said.

Cortez added that he wanted to see Golovkin fight against the WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and another Mexican boxer Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

“Golovkin is one of the toughest fighters out there but he doesn’t have that much name recognition here in the United States. He reminds me of the Klitschkos. The Klitschko brothers were fighting out here and they come out to fight and nobody really watched over here too much because they were not that popular here,” the referee said.

Golovkin’s last fight took place on October 19 in California, where the Kazakhstani boxer defended his WBA and IBO titles and won the WBC Interim title. Triple G KOed Rubio in the second round.

Golovkin’s next fight is scheduled to February 21, 2015 in Monte Carlo, Monaco against a British boxer Martin Murray.
