Kazakhstan figure skater Denis Ten won the silver medal of the man's World Figure Skating Championship held in Canada, Tengrinews.kz reports.

19-y.o. Ten was second after the short program and won the free skating finals with 174.92 points. His total points were 266.48 and put him in the second place overall, only a little over 1 point away from the gold. He yielded the first place to three-time world champion Canadian figure skater Patrick Chan, who scored 267.78 points. Spanish figure skater Javier Fernandez scored 249.06 points and became third.

Denis Ten managed to perform clean all the most difficult figure skating elements, including quadruple toe loop, cascade triple Axel – triple toe loop, step sequence and spins. Whereas Chan first crashed on a triple lutz and then on his triple Axel. Many hence believe that the fact that the event was held in Canada was one of the main reasons why Chan still got the gold.

Kazakhstan's Ten opened with a quadruple toe loop, then he delivered two triple Axels and stayed on his feet throughout a joyfully expressive performance set to "The Artist" and spectators rewarded the ecstatic Ten with a thunderous standing ovation, AFP writes.

"I am glad I could skate with power," Ten said. "I never thought I would finish the season this way."

"I can't believe I won the medal. It's like a dream I am still sleeping in," said Ten, a descendant of Korean general Min Keung Ho, according to AFP.

Denis Ten was seventh at the last year World Championship that was held in Nice. And he was ranked only twelfth in the Four Continents Figure Skating Championship that was held on February 2013, because he competed hurt much of the season due to various injuries.

Another Kazakhstan figure skater Abzal Rakimgaliyev scored 59.12 points and became 28th after the short program. He did not continue into the finals.
