Ethiopia's Imana Marga won the gold medal in the men's senior race during the World Cross Country Championships at Punta Umbria.

Ethiopian Imana Marga produced a devastating turn of speed to kill off a quartet of Kenyan rivals and win the men's world cross-country title on Sunday, AFP reports.

The 22-year-old, who just missed out on a medal in the 10,000m at the 2009 worlds, timed 33min 50sec around the 12km event raced over six laps of a 2km-long course under clear skies and with temperatures around 22 degrees Celsius (72F).

Paul Kipngetich Tanui claimed silver (33:52) and Vincent Kiprop Chepkok bronze at 1sec.

Long-time race leader Mathew Kisorio finished fourth, just 2sec off Chepkok. Another Kenyan, Geoffrey Mutai, could not fully translate his success in the marathon -- he clocked the sixth fastest time ever (2:04:55) in Rotterdam last April, coming in fifth.

Kenya retained their team title ahead of Ethiopia, with Uganda claiming bronze.
