Cotto prefers Canelo over Golovkin30 march 2015, 16:17
WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto has chosen the Mexican boxer Saul “Canelo” Alvarez over Gennady Golovkin of Kazakhstan as a potential opponent.
In the ESPN studio, Cotto was offered to choose between Alavrez and Golovkin. The Puerto Rican 34 y.o. picked 24 y.o. Canelo as the most desirable opponent. But the fight will take place in the end of the year at the earliest.
The WBC allowed Cotto to have one title defense fight before facing his official contender WBC Interim titleholder Gennady Golovkin.
According to Boxingnews24.com, Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach still does not consider Golovkin a financially viable opponent.
“There might have been 900 people in the room, fighting in Morocco or whatever. Who the heck is booking this guy? If there’s no money in such a high-risk fight? The fight I like the best for us (Cotto) is versus Canelo Alvarez. The fans would love that fight,” Roach told RingTV.com.
According to Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler, Cotto’s team has not responded to his offer to organize a fight in June yet.
