Almaty erects 300-kilogram medal in honor of 2012 Olympic winners

A 300-kilogram monument in the shape of a gigantic medal has been set in Almaty on Wednesday, August 15, as part of the Olympic Gold campaign in honor of Kazakhstan winners of the XXX London Olympic Games, Tengrinews.kz reports, citing Interfax-Kazakhstan. The 2-meter-tall iron medal is set at the square near Baluan Sholak Sports Palace (at the crossing of Abay and Baitursynov streets). According to Almaty Youth Policy Development State Foundation representatives, “this is a joint campaign of the Fund and Almaty Youth Policy Department.” Several of the Olympic prize-winners were expected to take part in the official opening of the monument, the officials added. “The goal of the Olympic Gold campaign is to publicize the success of Kazakhstan athletes at the 2012 Olympics and to honor the Olympic winners,” the Almaty Youth Policy Department press-service wrote in a press-release. “Almaty youth initiated creation of this monument in recognition of Kazakhstan athletes success. This medal will remind the young generation about our achievements, it will develop patriotic feelings and love for sport,” the press-release reads. Earlier Tengrinews.kz English reported that Kazakhstan national team was ranked 12th by medal count at the XXX London Summer Olympic Games. Kazakhstan athletes won seven gold, one silver and five bronze medals at Olympics. Gold medals were won by cyclist Aleksandre Vinokourov, weightlifters Zulfiya Chinshanlo, Maiya Maneza, Svetlana Podobedova and Ilya Ilyin, athlete Olga Rypakova and boxer Serik Sapiyev. Boxer Adilbek Niyazimbetov won silver. Bronze medals were won by Greco-Roman wrestler Daniyal Gajiyev, boxer Marina Volnova, wrestler Gyuzel Manyurova, boxer Ivan Dychko and freestyle wrestler Akzhurek Tanatarov. Kazakhstan is ranked 4th by records set at the 30th summer Olympics.
