World Class bike race in Almaty gathers 600 people

600 people have taken part in Tour of World Class Almaty bike race in Almaty on August 16, Tengrinews reports.

Around 1000 people applied for participation in the event, 600 of them turned out for the race.

Almaty Mayor Akhmetzhan Yessimov also took part in the race. When giving a start to the bicycle race, the Mayor stressed that cycling was becoming more and more popular in Almaty city.

"According to UNDP, the total number of bicycles in Almaty already exceeds 90,000. There are 1,066 gyms and  fitness clubs in the city. (...) According to statistics, 25 percent of Almaty residents are actively involved in sports and lead a healthy lifestyle, and their number is growing every day," Akhmetzhan Yessimov is quoted as saying by almaty.kz.

Apart from Kazakhstanis, racers from Russia, Tajikistan, China, the UK, Spain and Turkey took part in the event.

Kazakhstan’s Astana ProTeam's racers including the winner of the Tour of Almaty 2013 race Maxim Iglinskiy also competed in the race. Kazakhstan’s professional road bicycle racer Dmitriy Muravyev was the judge of the competition.

60 sets of medals were up for taking at the World Class Almaty bicycle race. The race was divided into categories by bicycle types (road racing and mountain), gender and age.  

All the participants received memorable souvenirs, and winners of each age group were awarded medals and prizes from the sponsors of the race - Kazakhstan's home appliances network Technodom, Mega shopping mall, Sony CIS and etc.

The event was organized by World Class along with the Almaty City Administration. This was the third race organised by finiteness center. The bike race was aimed at popularizing active lifestyle in Almaty and promoting cycling in Kazakhstan.
